Cash is No Longer King in China
In 2026, digital payments dominate every aspect of daily life in China. From street vendors to luxury hotels, WeChat Pay and Alipay are accepted everywhere. As a foreign traveler, setting up these payment systems is essential for a smooth trip.
Option 1: WeChat Pay (Most Popular)
WeChat Pay is built into the WeChat app which almost everyone in China uses. To set it up: (1) Download WeChat and register with your passport number. (2) Link an international credit card (Visa, Mastercard, or American Express). (3) Verify your identity with a passport scan and selfie.
International cards can be linked directly since 2024, making it much easier for tourists. However, there is a 3% transaction fee for international card top-ups.
Option 2: Alipay (Best for Spending Control)
Alipay launched the Tour Pass feature specifically for foreign visitors. You can pre-load funds using your home currency, avoiding fluctuating exchange rates. The Alipay app also has an English interface, making navigation easier.
Option 3: International Cards
Visa and Mastercard are accepted at most hotels, high-end restaurants, and major tourist attractions. However, smaller shops and street food vendors typically only accept WeChat Pay or Alipay. UnionPay is the most widely accepted local card network.
